Social Media
Don’t fund surveillance capitalism - don’t use Facebook! Here are some alternatives that I use :)
To be honest, I don’t really use social media a whole lot anyway, in part because of the problems outlined in my blog post, and in part because I prefer direct conversations (either over the phone, through direct messaging, or at some point in the semi-distant future… in person!.
Update for pandemic times!
If you are using zoom to keep in touchwith friends and family, make sure to enable these privacy settings recommended by the EFF.
Alternatively, Jitsi is a federated, free, and easy to use video call software that respects your privacy. I have been using this for video group chats, and love the easy to share links that allow the easy creation and scheduling of calls.
signal messenger
Signal messenger is a simple and secure way of communicating with others. It is similar to WhatsApp or Facebook messenger, minus the spyware. Signal also implements its own encrypted voice and video call options.
Ask me for my phone number to start talking on signal!
matrix
Communicating over matrix provides more features than signal, and doesn’t tie your account to a phone number. Matrix is federated, which means you can choose which server (including your own) to base your account on.
Start a conversation with me on matrix. If you don’t already have a client, you may wish to use the element.io app or website.
fediverse
The fediverse is a collection of different federated platforms which all interconnect. These platforms include Mastodon, PeerTube, HubZilla, PixelFed, and many more.
A list of the many different fediverse platforms and what they do can be found on https://fediverse.party
mobilizon
I’m excited about mobilizon, a new events service as an ethical alternative to Facebook events, groups and pages. https://joinmobilizon.org
